How it works

Starting out in business, you could do with an invisible expert to advise you.

So lets assume you have decided this is for you, attended the meeting, sorted out the agreement and got started as an apprentice, how does it actually work.

The exact plan differs from one apprentice to another, and depending on where you live.  Every apprentice is treated very much as a unique and special person, so there are no standard formulas.

In many cases those who live in the UK will meet up with your mentor from time to time, how often depending on the projects you are involved in, the need you have and how closely he becomes involved in the projects you are involved in. In addition you will have reporting means so that he knows what you are achieving and with the use of the internet and sometimes phones and teleconferencing be in contact more often. Some apprentices are supported in part by other apprentices, or past apprentices. Some may also become a part of a consortium group where a number of them work together on parallel projects and regularly talk together.

If you live in the USA, or Canada then meeting up is likely to be less frequent, and far more will be achieved by distance means. Some may also be involved in small group sessions, with 1 to 1 as well over a week occasionally.

If you are outside of Europe and the North American continent then you are likely to have to come to one of these for meetings. Like the majority of the apprentices from North America, you are likely to have to come to the UK for the initial meeting and to make the agreement, at your own expense, at this time the initial business and action plan is worked out and future trips will be funded out of the profits you are already making.

The majority of apprentices will work out, with their mentor, a business plan for a project, often as one of a series of projects they will do, the topic or opportunity is usually one that they have been introduced to. They will usually plan this positive cash flow, with no funding beyond what they have acquired from other projects already successfully run, on other occasions they may involve business angels. It will be risk averse, therefore just about anything that can go wrong will have been looked at in detail. However no one should think that this is mostly theory, it is not, part of any plan is the action and this often is part underway before some details of the plan are being completed. This action plan, is the driving force and has to be applied or improved upon.  Often some resources already exist or other companies or organisations concerned will also be providing some parts.

Employees sell their time, wealth creators put plans into action and solve problems. If you are well ahead of schedule you can do something else with the time you have, if you are behind, on occasions you may have to work through the night to get it completed on time. You will run your life around the business, not the business around your social life.

Some apprentices may also on occasions get the chance to join in projects being run by the mentor, and most will from time to time attend some meetings or take part as parts of projects with him. When this happens expect long days, also bear in mind that you may then become involved with people all around the world, so hours may vary depending on who you are communicating with.

Keith, your mentor,  sees mentoring as empowering, therefore you will be responsible for the successes, and businesses that are created will be yours. You will not be a passenger, nor is anyone going to come and do tasks for you that you have failed to do. Most problems will be prepared for, but others you will cope with, but of course have advice on how to do this.

There will of course be tasks that you cannot do, other assistance that you will need and this of achieved by commissioning, getting a specialist to do this for you. In turn you may take on commissions to help others. In the longer term you will need a team and adding key team members, mostly employees, can allow you to juggle a number of projects.

The more successful and better you perform the more you will be responsible for making decision, the less the more you will be told what to do.
